Replacing M6 Eden Bridge joints for Highways England

Client: Highways England

Location: North West

Route One have worked with Highways England on numerous occasions in the past – we continue to work on the HE network and are a supply chain partner for multiple areas – and the excellent service with which we have provided them in the past was the driving factor behind our selection for this project.

The replacement of these deteriorated joints was an important project for a number of reasons – new joints would help to prolong the life of the bridge by improving its durability considerably, whilst also catering for the required levels of bridge movement and providing a safer ride for motorists. In total, approximately 400 metres of joints were determined to be in need of replacement, and our expert team swiftly set about doing so.

Day and night amidst live traffic under traffic management, with phased working required to minimise disruption to the network, multiple Route One teams worked to install Sentinel EMR joints and Thormajoint asphaltic plug joints into the bridge. The presence of live traffic and low-light conditions could have posed risk to our teams, but thorough risk assessments were carried out beforehand to ensure that this was not the case.

After much hard work, our teams managed to complete all the required joint replacements to the total satisfaction of the client. We are pleased to have completed another challenging yet necessary project, and look forward to continuing our strong working relationship with Highways England.
